Portugal’s birthplace lies in the north and Porto is the gateway to a journey through the diversity of the natural and cultural heritage of a region that, crossed by the River Douro, stretches from the Atlantic to the Spanish border. Cradle of nationality and of the Douro Demarcated Region, which is the oldest demarcated and regulated wine region in the world (1756), the north of Portugal expresses its strength and identity in wine regions and wines that have become flagships of Portugal, such as Port Wine, one of the most internationalised wines in the world, and the still wines of the Douro, the Vinhos Verdes, whose name reflects the exuberance of the green natural landscape, the sparkling wines of Távora and Varosa, with vineyards planted on granite, lithic and transitional soils, excellent for producing fresh wines, and the wines of Trás-os-Montes, which many say is one of Portugal's "next big things".
